About Hunter Valley Protection Alliance

Postby HVPA_research » Tue Jun 29, 2010 12:30 am

Hunter Valley Protection Alliance (HVPA) is a citizens action group aiming to protect the environmental and social fabric of our Valley from damage caused by irresponsible expansion of the resource industries. In particular we oppose reckless expansion of open cut coal mines towards our villages as well as establishment of the coal seam gas (CSG) industry in rural residential areas. Our main environmental concerns are listed on the following web page:

We believe that legislation governing development of fossil fuel industries,if it exists at all, is deeply flowed and out of date. Firstly it almost completely excludes local citizens, who live on the land and carry all the environmental cost, from the decision making process (see ). Secondly, individual resource projects or their parts are approved by various branches piece-meal. There is never time or requirement for proper evaluation of the potential cumulative effects of all industries in given area. In our part of the Hunter Valley, which includes villages Broke, Milbrodale, Bulga and Warkwarth on the banks of the Wollombi Brook, we are surrounded by coal mining leases, Army shooting range and geothermal power lease. Any area not covered by mining leases is claimed by AGL as a potential coal seam gas field.
