UPPER HUNTER DUST MONITORING Thursday 8-SEP-2012 24:00

Dust situation eased today. PM10 health alarms were issued for 3 locations around Singleton ad midnight but the conditions improved later on in the day.
These were: Camberwell, Maison Dieu, SingletonNW.

COMMENTS FROM LOCAL RESIDENTS ON HVPA MAILING LISTS:
Well isn’t it interesting…

The wind is still blowing hard , but the PM10 levels are right down….

We’ve seen the Warkworth mine water trucks going flat out and clearly they’ve reduced operations…

According to the study commissioned by EPA in 2009, more than 80% of the PM10 pollution in the Hunter is from coal mines and the biggest contributor to that is the movement of trucks on the haul roads…the second highest is wind erosion of slag heaps and cleared land.

But given that the wind is still high…they must have reduced truck movements and / or increased the water truck dust suppression.

Which just goes to show that they CAN keep the PM10 below 50…just most of the time they don’t care.

Astute observations. Goes to show, you cannot take your eyes off them. Self Regulation, what a joke.
