EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

invitation from the former NSW Labor Government to consider a Scoping Paper on the development of
a Coal and Gas Strategy. The HVWIA is a member based not-‐for-‐profit association representing over 165
grape-‐growing, wine and associated industry members. The Submission provides feedback herein on
the key policy, legal and procedural matters that ought to be addressed in any Coal and Gas Strategy. It
also provides:

1. An outline of the unique characteristics and features of the Hunter Valley Wine Country,
including viticulture and related tourism;

2. The position of the HVWIA on proposed coal seam methane gas exploration and mining in the
Hunter Valley, including a response to the specific matters raised in the Scoping Paper and
commitments made by politicians during the recent State election campaign; and

3. Recommendations as to how to resolve the land use conflict between the wine industry and
coal seam gas mining and further expansion of coal mining. Today there
are over 230 wine related businesses and vineyards spread over an area of 4,500 ha. The region, known
as Hunter Valley Wine Country, primarily includes areas in Broke/Fordwich, Lovedale, Pokolbin, Mount
View, Millfield, Wollombi and Singleton.
