Australia's ascent to top spot in the global league of liquefied natural gas exporters is likely to take longer and cost billions of dollars more than forecast as developers compete for scarce labour and raw materials.

If all proposed LNG projects come online on time, Australia would produce around 160 million tonnes per annum (mpta) by 2020, according to some analyst estimates, eight times more than now and dwarfing top producer Qatar's 77 mpta capacity.

Projects have stacked up as developers eye the world's biggest energy growth markets in Asia, but many schemes are likely to be cancelled or delayed as competition for resources inflates costs and eats into potential investment return.

"Realistically, how many of these projects can Australia deliver on time and on budget? I'm pretty convinced that some of the projects that are sanctioned in the next couple of years will turn out to be negative net present value," analyst with Macquarie in Sydney Adrian Wood said
