Possible Underground Coal Gasification in WA

Here is an article from Gas Today Mon, 19 April 2010.
Cougar Energy prowls WA for possible UCG development
Cougar Energy and Eneabba Gas have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the exploration and development of the Sargon tenement in the mid-west region of Western Australia as an underground coal gasification (UCG) development.

Underground coal gasification is an interesting technology. Unlike the coal seam gas industry, UCG utilizes the coal seam resource fully i.e. coal as well as gas. The environmental footprint would be therefor much smaller then that of CSG - probably less then underground long wall mining.

The technology has been already successfully tested in Queensland at Chinchilla but the Queensland Government refused to support it. They decided, perhaps on political grounds, to give all their support to CSG industry.
