Council's tough line on coal seam gas

Updated Fri Jul 1, 2011 8:16am AEST

Muswellbrook Shire Council has formally adopted a tough strategic policy on coal seam gas mining.

The policy says council will oppose any activity from the industry which compromises water security or replaces viable existing industries.

There is currently strong interest in exploring for gas deposits in the Baerami Valley and Sandy Hollow.

Mayor Martin Rush says the policy is a clear warning to coal seam gas companies interested in the region.

"That they ought not invest large chunks of capital into exploration if, at the end of the day, those projects won't be able to be supported by the community because they have an intolerable impact on water quality or where it would create a land use conflict with a more sustainable industry, such as the thoroughbred industry," he said.
