Media Release – 26th Sept 2012

Shire Council to hold Public Hearing into Health Impacts from Coal and CSG

Narrabri Shire Council yesterday agreed to develop a Public Hearing into the health impacts arising from opencut coal mining and the extraction of coal seam gas.

Deputy Mayor, Bevan O’Regan moved that a Committee be formed under s734 of the Local Government Act to hear evidence from a panel of health experts and that the findings be included in a report to the Narrabri Shire Council.

The adjoining councils of Moree Plains, Walgett, Coonamble, Warambungle, Gunnedah, Liverpool Plains, Tamworth and Gwydir should be personally invited and a general invitation should then be issued to any other councils to attend.

Questions relating to the Terms of Reference, composition of the steering committee, membership of the expert panel and hearing dates will be determined and finalized prior to the next council meeting.

“Section 734 is a special democratic instrument of the 1993 Local Government Act which Council is able to use to ensure the health concerns of local people are properly addressed. I am very happy that this new council is supporting this important initiative.” said Councillor O’Regan.

“Narrabri Shire is the new frontier for coal and coal seam gas and we do not want to repeat the mistakes that are clearly evident in the Hunter Valley” he said.

Motion

“That the Council call on Section 734 of the LG Act to call on a panel of experts in the field of health, to report to the Narrabri Shire Council on questions from members of the public who have concerns about health issues of the coal seam gas industry and open cast coal mining to a public meeting in the Crossing Theatre at a date to be arranged as soon as possible set by a steering committee of Council.”
