Chapter Summary of Rich Land, Wasteland
February 28, 2012 – 12:40 am

Introduction

What I found – the invasion of Australia and the displacement of its people by coal and CSG companies, backed by government; and why I wrote this book.

Chapter 1 Living with open-cuts

Orientation to open-cut mines: the seige of the village Camberwell, Hunter Valley, NSW.

Chapter 2 Rights: theirs or ours?

Mineral rights and royalties: the erasing of the town of Acland, QLD, and the battle for Felton, QLD.

Chapter 3 Where coal is king

The Hunter around Singleton and Muswellbrook, NSW – from a balance of wineries and horses and dairies and rural peace and villages and coal – to COAL.

Chapter 4 What price a life?

Health impacts and costs from coal and coal power: Blackmans Flat, Lithgow region; Singleton and Muswellbrook, Hunter region; Collie, W.A.; Port Augusta, S.A. – pollutants in water and air and soil, PMs and orange clouds, fly ash and mercury, higher rates of respiratory illnesses like asthma, cancers, heart attacks and strokes – and the ongoing fight for health studies.

Chapter 5 Clearing out the country

Mudgee region, NSW: the cleared-out Cumbo Valley and infrasound/low frequency noise (ILFN); the dead and dying villages of Ulan and Wollar; beautiful Bylong under attack; Mudgee’s future.

Chapter 6 Dark times in the sunshine state

Queensland’s Coral Coast becoming the Coal Coast, heavy industry or World Heritage, short-term coal or long term tourism in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park? – Mackay’s Hay Point and Dalrymple Bay coal ports, the disappearing village of Louisa Creek, Bowen’s expanding Abbot Point coal port; the inland coal trail – Collinsville, Scottville, Glenden, Moranbah to Capella; donga camps and the fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) and drive-in, drive-out (DIDO) issues as the practice expands, even for dedicated mining towns.

Chapter 7 You can’t eat coal

The land rehabilitation myth; Caroona on the Liverpool Plains, NSW; Capella and Clermont on the Darling Downs, QLD – longwall mining, mines on floodplains.

Chapter 8 Wide spaces, narrow vision

The Golden Triangle QLD: food bowls and floods and mines don’t mix –’Springwood’ vs Xstrata Rolleston, Orion vs Bandanna; Blackwater to Moura; Wandoan to Warra.

Chapter 9 Allowing the unthinkable

The scenic Gloucester Valley, NSW, under current and impending impacts; the Gloucester Project – a gleam of hope; Margaret River and the South West of W.A., fighting one mine or gasfield at a time, lives and investment on hold.

Chapter 10 Who needs water?

Longwall mining damage south of Sydney, to rivers and their swamps and aquifer sources, risking Sydney’s water supply; Rivers SOS; subsidence and homes; the threat to the NSW Southern Highlands and the Central Coast, already sinking in parts. Water worries from dewatering and polluting in Collie, WA., in QLD and the Hunter Valley and the Goulburn River; Running Stream, NSW; the Asian takeover of the west; the Latrobe Valley, VIC.

Chapter 11 Putting people last

The exploration drilling nightmare of one woman vs. BHP (NSW); Collie and the shameful Shotts episode (W.A); historic ‘Flatlands’ (NSW) under double threat; mine workers under pressure; ‘solastalgia’ and ‘soliphilia’.

Chapter 12 Methane on the march

Un-natural gas; ‘cleaner’ CSG?. QLD: water, salt, health and social issues; underground coal gasification (UCG); Tara blockades and Lock the Gate (LTG). NSW: Gloucester, the Hunter, the Northern Rivers, Narrabri. S.A. and shale gas, W.A. and shale and tight gas; TAS and VIC and CSG.

Chapter 13 Going, going, gone…

The other natural resources – indigenous, historic and environmental… Bimblebox Nature Refuge and the ‘opening up’ of the Galilee Basin QLD; the Gardens of Stone, Dharawal, Warkworth Sands (NSW) ; the farce of offsets and environmental impact statements; ‘our’ state forests under siege – Ben Bullen SF; the Gunnedah Basin coal rush – Leard SF – and the CSG fiasco in the Pilliga SF(NSW)

Chapter 14 New frontiers

The Latrobe Valley (VIC), brown coal and coal power, dealing with ‘dirty’ coal; the Earthworker strategy for a just transition for workers; health issues; coal exploration beyond Latrobe. New treatments of poor coal and higher prices, so massive new export coalfields for Asia in WA, like the Canning Basin up near Derby, and in SA like the Arckaringa and Lake Phillipson areas near Cooper Pedy – environmental disasters?
